Description
Newbigging Farmhouse is an earlier 19th-century single-storey, three-bay T-plan cottage that has seen later additions. It is constructed from stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone, featuring droved ashlar dressings and an eaves course, with long and short quoins.
The south elevation is three bays wide, featuring a deep-set panelled timber door at the center, which has an astragalled fanlight above it, flanked by windows. The west wing has a piend-roof and includes a bipartite window on the south side, a vertically-boarded timber door with glazing to the left of the west elevation, and a window to the right. The rear elevation was not visible as of 1997.
The east elevation is blank, while the rear wing has a gabled projection on the left side.
Surrounding the house are hooped iron railings with a matching gate and urn-finialled fluted iron gateposts to the south. The boundary walls are made of stugged, squared, and snecked sandstone with semicircular coping on the south and west sides.
The windows predominantly feature two-pane lower sashes and eight-pane upper sashes, supported by timber mullions. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods. Gablehead stacks with rendered flues are diamond-set and grouped in threes, complete with copes and circular cans on stone pedestals, along with a matching single wallhead stack on the west wing. The skews are ashlar-coped.
