Cottage, Blackadder Mains

This cottage at Blackadder Mains dates from the later 19th century and has undergone some alterations. It is a single-storey building with an attic and has a rectangular plan with six bays. Originally, it was two separate cottages. The exterior features stugged squared and snecked sandstone with droved dressings, while the rear and side elevations are made of roughly squared and snecked sandstone. The building has slightly raised long and short quoins, corniced margins around the openings, and chamfered arrises.

On the south elevation, there are two steps leading to a panelled door located in the inner left bay, which has glazed upper panels. Each bay has a window, with a bipartite window in the inner right bay. The north elevation is irregular with four bays and has been altered. It features a modern partly glazed door in the inner right bay and a glazed double door in the inner left bay, with a window in each of the flanking bays.

The cottage has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The south side has ornamental slating with bands of fish-scale slates. There are ashlar curvilinear dormer heads above the intermediate bays on the south, each topped with ball finials and segmental-arched windows, along with round-arched panels at the gable heads. The building also has ashlar coped skews with kneelers and skewputts. There are two flue brick stacks with coped apexes on the west and east sides, and a brick, two-flue stack located at the centre.

The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 1996.
