Description
58 Main Street in Ratho is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house with a symmetrical rectangular plan. It is constructed from squared Aberdeen Bond whinstone, featuring droved sandstone margins and dressings, and has a base course.
The south elevation has a central emphasis with three doors grouped at the center, connected by a stone platt. The central door is deep-set and has a letterbox fanlight, positioned higher than the flanking doors, with a roll moulding above the lintel. There is a corbelled, pedimented centerpiece at the first floor, which is recessed to accommodate a window framed by a bolection moulded architrave. A string course runs between the two corbelled sides of the centerpiece, and above the window, corbelling supports the pediment, which is outlined in sandstone and features a blind oculus at its center. The chimney stack is located at the apex, with truncated pepperpot stacks at each end.
Flanking the central bays are 12-pane sash and case windows on both the ground and first floors. The roof is red pantiled with semi-circular clay ridge tiles, and features ashlar coping on the skews along with roll-moulded skewputts. The apex stacks are square and rendered with coped tops.
