Description
56 Main Street in Ratho is a mid-19th century pair of houses, built after 1852. This two-storey, three-bay terrace has a near-symmetrical rectangular plan and was raised from a single storey relatively soon after its construction. The exterior is made of coursed whinstone with droved sandstone margins and quoins, featuring a sandstone eaves band.
On the main elevation, there are three irregular bays at the ground level. The left outer bay has a window, while the door is off-centre to the left for No 56, and the right outer bay contains both a window and a door for No 54. At the first floor, there are three windows that are symmetrically arranged. The windows are 12-pane sash and case style. The roof is covered with red pantiles and has ashlar coping on the skews, with rendered and coped apex stacks.
