Description
42 Main Street in Ratho is a mid-19th century single-storey cottage featuring three bays, with a lower two-bay half-piend wing added sympathetically to the left. The building has a rectangular plan and is constructed of stugged squared whinstone, with stugged sandstone margins and quoins, raised cills, and a base course.
On the main elevation, there is a central door in the three-bay cottage, which is a four-panelled design with a letterbox fanlight above. Above the door, there is a raggle of a former applied gable. The cottage has flanking windows and a recessed addition to the left, along with a rendered bay that blocks a former passage to the outer left.
The windows are 12-pane sash and case style. The roof is covered with grey slate and features ashlar skews and coped sandstone apex stacks.
The property is enclosed by a low rubble wall with semi-circular coping, and the side boundary walls rise upwards to the north.
