Description

Craigcrook Castle, located on Craigcrook Road in Edinburgh, is primarily a 17th-century structure that was originally designed as a two-storey building with a basement, following a Z-plan layout measuring 30 feet by 23 feet. It features a southwest round tower with a diameter of 20 feet and a northeast square tower measuring 17 feet. There is a turret stair located at the southeast angle. An eastern addition was made shortly after the original construction, which included turrets at the eastern angle. A northwest addition infills the re-entrant angle, creating southern and western fronts of approximately equal length. The entrance tower and a small northeast addition were designed by WH Playfair in 1835. A further addition to the east was completed by Thomas Leadbetter in 1891. The castle is characterized by crowstepped gables, pedimented dormer windows, and a roll-moulded arched gateway. The interior includes some interesting 19th-century work, including murals by David Roberts.
