Description
Murthly Castle is a large F-plan structure with its oldest part being a southwest tower, a four-storey and attic 16th-century tower house that likely incorporates earlier work. The castle features turrets on the northeast and southwest corners, and an angle finial on the northwest. From the early 17th century onwards, there were additions made to the east, including a two-storey section with attics that was later remodelled to two storeys, along with a four-storey crow-stepped tower. To the north, there is a T-plan addition that is three storeys high with swept dormer heads.
The entrance hall is two storeys tall, featuring a pediment and a Venetian doorway at the first-floor level, with a curved outside staircase and a three-arch loggia below, which is believed to date from around 1725 to 1740 and is designed in the manner of William Adam. A piend roof addition to the north wing was added around 1800. The eastern end of the east wing was reconstructed as a dining room, which includes a hammer beam roof and a large two-storey addition with a square angle tower topped with a pyramid roof. This section contains notable features such as a ballroom and a staircase with fine painted ceilings, dating from around 1875. The middle wing was rebuilt in 1893 by A. Duncan, who was the Clerk of Works at Murthly, possibly based on sketch designs by Leadbetter and Fairley.
