Description

The wall at 87 Ravelston Dykes Road in Edinburgh dates from the 18th century and is constructed of coped rubble. It incorporates a composite garden folly that features a fireplace and dormer heads, as well as an entrance to an ice house.

The fireplace, dated 1624, is designed in the Renaissance style and is adorned with a Greek fret, rosettes, and dog-tooth detailing. An inscription along the cornice reads: "I MAR 1624 YEAR SO AS LIVELY STONES ARE BUILT UP A SPIRITUAL HOUSE I PETER 2 5." The tympani above the fireplace is decorated with dormer windows that have crowning finials in the shapes of a rose, thistle, and star.

The entrance to the ice house features carved strapwork and a shield on the lintel that displays the combined arms of the Foulis and Bannatyne families. Above this, there is a detached stone with a crowning sun.
