Description

67 Ravelston Dykes Road is a pair of identical two-storey flat-roofed villas built between 1961 and 1964 by architects Morris and Steedman. These villas are situated on a sloping site, with No 67 constructed by Robert Steedman for himself and another owner at No 65, positioned at a lower ground level to the north. The buildings are square in plan and feature single-storey wings extending to the south, which house stores and cellars at ground level, located to the left of the entrances on the east elevation, recessed behind car ports. Above these wings are balconies or terraces accessed from the first-floor kitchen and utility areas.

On the garden side, the two villas appear more detached due to the single-storey wings being set well back. However, the entrance front presents a more unified and enclosed appearance, with screen walls in front of the first-floor terraces over the car ports linking the two buildings, and flat roofs that oversail the terraces. The design emphasizes horizontal lines, featuring full-width strip windows at both the ground and first floors on the east (entrance) elevations, with smaller glazed areas and narrow strip windows at ground level, as well as continuously-glazed strip windows at the first floor. The garden elevations are more open, showcasing full-height, timber-framed, continuously-glazed windows at the first floor, with cills at floor level and an aluminium handrail at waist height. The villas are equipped with 'Pierson' sashless sliding windows. The materials used include brick, breezeblock, and concrete, finished with white-painted cement render, along with plywood and aluminium angle edging on the roof.

On the west elevations, there are 'drying areas' to the right in front of the single-storey store wings, which are behind vertical timber screens. These features remain as originally designed at No 67, while alterations have been made by the owners at No 65.

Inside No 67, the original interior scheme has been preserved, featuring fitted cupboards, redwood (cedar) flooring, and wall and ceiling boarding. Large sliding wood-panelled screens divide the spacious living area on the first floor. No 65 was not seen during the assessment.
