Description
Brechin Castle is a quadrangular structure with a west-facing entrance front that features three storeys and eleven windows. The building is constructed of ashlar stone, with the central three windows raised and topped with a pediment that includes a carved tympanum dated 1711. It has circular angle towers with conical roofs and dragon weather vanes. The battlemented flank walls were added in the mid-19th century.
The south side of the castle was originally from the 17th century but was remodelled in 1854, which included the addition of a long gallery to the courtyard and a tower added in 1863 at the southeast angle. This section incorporates fragments of the older castle and underwent further remodelling between 1854 and 1863. The east wing was also constructed during this period, while the north wing, originally two storeys with a pend, was raised to three storeys around 1854 to 1863.
Inside, the castle features fine interiors, with some from the 18th century in the west wing, while the remainder dates from the 1854-63 alterations. Notably, the ceilings were cast from moulds made from 16th-century originals. The architect responsible for the alterations and additions between 1854 and 1863 was John Henderson from Edinburgh.
