Description

1 Upper Gray Street in Edinburgh is a classical house built in 1810. It is a single storey with a raised basement and features a symmetrical three-bay design. Originally constructed as one unit, it has since been subdivided. The principal elevation facing Salisbury Place is made of lightly stugged cream sandstone ashlar, while the Upper Gray Street side is built from coursed rubble sandstone with droved ashlar dressings. The building includes a base course, a dividing band course, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with raised quoins on the principal elevation.

On the north elevation facing Salisbury Place, there is an advanced central bay with steps leading up to a central doorway that has a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight. There are single windows in the outer left and right bays.

The east elevation facing Upper Gray Street features projecting cills on the first-floor windows. It also has a central doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight, along with a single window above and in the outer left and right bays. There is a pedestrian gate next to the house to the south.

The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with four-light canted dormers. There is a tall coped wallhead stack to the south and octagonal moulded cans.

The property is enclosed by low coped boundary walls along Upper Gray Street, with replacement railings, and a high rubble wall to the south.
