Description

7 West Brighton Crescent is a classical house built around 1826 by John Baxter of Portobello. It is a single storey building with a basement at the rear and features three bays, with a receded bay to the right. The front is finished in polished ashlar stone, while the half-basement is made of droved ashlar. The left bay is also droved, and the side and rear elevations are constructed from rubble with droved sandstone dressings. There is a band course between the ground level and the floor, a moulded string course at lintel height, and a cornice with a blocking course. Each opening has segmental-arched recesses.

The principal elevation is symmetrical, featuring five concrete steps leading to the centre, where there is a panelled door topped by a rectangular fanlight made of plate glass. Windows are located in the flanking bays, and there is an extension with a window to the left.

The rear elevation is asymmetrical and has undergone later alterations to its windows. A door is positioned slightly off centre at the basement, which is the only access to this level. There is also a garden door from the ground level at the outer left of the extension. The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, although the bay to the left at the rear has been altered to a 16-pane timber casement window. The roof is piended and covered with slate, and there are rendered and coped wallhead stacks at the side elevations, squared to the southeast.

Inside, the house retains working shutters and original cornices. The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping at the front, which previously had railings, while the rear features rubble and brick garden walls.
