Description

4 West Brighton Crescent is a classical house located in Portobello, Edinburgh, designed by John Baxter around 1826. It is a single-storey building with a basement and features three bays. The ground floor is finished in polished ashlar, while the basement is made of droved ashlar, and the side elevations are constructed from rubble, which has been heavily pointed in 1994. There is a band course between the basement and ground floor, a moulded string course at lintel height, a cornice, and a blocking course, with segmental-arched recesses for the openings.

On the southwest (principal) elevation, there are five steps made of ashlar, with concrete repairs, leading to a central panelled door that has an original cast-iron handrail. Above the door is a rectangular radial fanlight, with windows in the flanking bays and a basement opening to the left. The wall to the left is slightly set back and features a boarded door in the centre.

The northeast (rear) elevation has not been seen since 1994, but maps indicate an extension to the southeast, which does not appear on Sutter's map from 1856 but is shown on the first edition OS map from 1896.

The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, with a piend and platformed slate roof, and a piended slate roof on the rear extension. There are brick stacks, with a square rendered stack with a coping wallhead, a rendered wallhead stack on the front of the southeast elevation, and a brick and coped stack at the northeast corner.

The interior has not been seen since 1994. The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping and were formerly topped with railings.
