Description

2 West Brighton Crescent in Portobello, Edinburgh, is an early 19th-century single-storey house with a basement and three bays, designed by John Baxter. The building features polished ashlar on the ground floor, droved ashlar on the basement, and rubble on the northwest, southeast, and rear elevations, with a droved ashlar extension to the right. A band course separates the basement from the ground floor, complemented by a moulded string course at lintel height, a cornice, and a blocking course.

The southwest elevation is symmetrical, with four steps leading up to an Edinburgh panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular radial fanlight. Windows are located in the flanking bays, and there is an extension to the right.

The northeast elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a modern extension from around 1992 that includes a glazed room. There is a boarded door at the basement on the left and windows in the remaining bays on both the basement and ground floors.

The house has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a piend and platformed slate roof, and a flat roof on the right extension. The northwest elevation has a squared render shouldered wallhead stack with coping, while the southeast elevation features a sandstone, coped stack at the original wallhead position, and there is a sandstone and coped wallhead stack at the rear.

Inside, there is a pilastered timber classical fireplace in the front room on the right side, designed in the Adam style with relief work. Cornices and working shutters remain in place.

The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping at the front and were formerly topped with railings.
