1 West Brighton Crescent, Portobello, Edinburgh

1 West Brighton Crescent in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a classical house designed by John Baxter around 1826, with later alterations. The building features a single bay with a basement and a three-bay layout, now subdivided by floor. The ground floor is finished in polished ashlar, while the basement has droved and stugged ashlar, and the southeast elevation and rear are harled. There is a band course between the basement and ground floors, a moulded string course at lintel height, a cornice, a blocking course, and segmental-arched recesses for the openings on the ground floor.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are five steps leading up to a central panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular fanlight made of plate glass. There are windows on either side of the door and in the basement.

The southwest (rear) elevation has been altered and features two bays. The left bay has been replaced with a narrow modern glazed door and a rectangular plate glass fanlight above.

The principal elevation has 12-pane timber sash and case windows on the ground floor and 9-pane sash and case windows in the basement. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring a square-rendered stack with a coping wallhead to the southeast and a rendered and coped stack to the northwest.

The interiors were not seen during the last inspection in 1994. The boundary walls consist of droved ashlar with coping on the northeast side and tall rubble garden walls at the rear.
