Description
52 Brighton Place in Edinburgh is a building designed by John Baxter of Portobello, dating from around 1824. It was originally a mirrored pair of two-storey terraced houses with a basement and three bays, accompanied by single-storey pavilions that have since been demolished to the southwest of No 52. The exterior features polished ashlar stone that is deeply channelled at the ground level, with droved ashlar used for the basement and the pavilion flanking No 50, while the rear and north elevation are constructed of rubble. There are band courses between the basement and ground floor, as well as between the ground and first floor, along with a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, a blocking course, and a coping on the pavilion next to No 50.
On the southeast (principal) elevation, there are five ashlar steps leading up to panelled doors in the outer bays, which are flanked by original cast-iron handrails. Above these doors are plate glass rectangular fanlights and first-floor windows. The intermediate bays contain windows on each floor, while the pavilion of No 50 has a window and a boarded door. There is also a window in the left bay and in the basement wing of No 50, along with a central basement door for No 52 and a window in the right bay.
The northwest (rear) elevation shows the back of No 50, which is not fully visible. The centre bay of No 52 is blank except for a flush-panelled door at ground level, topped with a three-pane rectangular fanlight.
The windows in No 50 are plate glass timber sash and case, while No 52 features 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design with a platform at the apex. There are rendered and coped mutual stacks at the front, ashlar and coped mutual stacks at the rear, an ashlar and coped wallhead stack to the southwest, and a rendered and coped wallhead stack to the northeast.
Inside, No 50 has not been seen since 1994. However, No 52 retains working shutters, an original cast-iron banister on the stairs, and a cupola that lights the stairwell. The front rooms feature a classical chimneypiece made of black marble on the ground floor and white marble on the first floor.
The boundary walls are constructed of weathered ashlar with coping and were formerly topped with railings. There are also tall rubble and brick garden walls at the rear.
