Description
5 West Brighton Crescent in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a classical house built around 1825 by John Baxter, with later alterations. It is a single-storey building with a basement and features three bays, including a recessed bay to the left. The front is finished in polished ashlar, while the basement is in droved ashlar, and the northwest and rear elevations are harled. There is a band course between the basement and ground levels, a moulded string course at lintel height, a cornice, and a blocking course. The openings have segmental-arched recesses.
On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are five ashlar steps leading to a panelled door with a plate glass rectangular fanlight above it at the center. The flanking bays have windows in segmental-arched recesses that are cement rendered, and there is a window in the basement bay to the right. The basement bay to the left has been altered to create a double door garage. A window is present in the ground of the recessed bay to the left, and there is a modern glazed door to the basement.
The southwest (rear) elevation is not fully visible as of 1994, and there are no extensions noted. The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows at the ground level of the principal elevation, with a 9-pane window in the basement bay to the right and modern swing-pane windows at the rear. The roof is slate with a piended design, and there are rendered and coped wallhead stacks at the front and rear of the side elevations.
The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls consist of droved ashlar with polished ashlar coping at the front, which formerly had railings but is now broken to the left for garage access. The rear features tall rubble and brick garden walls.
