Description

3 West Brighton Crescent in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a classical house designed by John Baxter in 1824, with later alterations. It is a single-storey building with a basement and features three bays. The front is finished in polished ashlar, while the basement is made of droved ashlar, and the rear is harled. There is a band course between the basement and ground levels, a moulded string course at the height of the lintels, a cornice, and a blocking course. The ground floor openings have segmental-arched recesses.

On the northeast (principal) elevation, there are five steps leading up to a central panelled door, which is topped by a rectangular radial fanlight. There are windows in each of the flanking bays and additional windows in the outer bays of the basement.

The southwest (rear) elevation features a later timber verandah. The ground floor has 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the basement has modern metal windows. One window on the left side of the rear elevation has been replaced with a modern glazed door that has a plate glass fanlight above. The roof is slate piended, and there are rendered wallhead stacks on the side elevations, squared to the southeast.

Inside, the vestibule and hall have a stone floor. The original mantlepieces remain in the three main rooms on the ground floor: a black marble mantle with later alterations to the grate and hearth in the front right room, a white marble mantle with a later grate in the back right room, and a timber mantle in the front left room that retains its original grate and caustic tile hearth. The doors are in good condition, with double doors opening into the rooms on the right. The original cornice is still present in the rear right room, and all shutters are intact and functional. There is a later staircase at the rear leading to the basement, which was originally fitted with a cast iron banister.

The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with polished ashlar coping at the front, which originally had railings. The rear features tall rubble garden walls.
