Description

John Baxter of Portobello, circa 1826. Single storey with basement to rear, 3-bay classical house. Polished ashlar to ground; droved ashlar to basement to SW; rubble to NE; bull-faced rendered to rear and SE elevation. Band course between basement and ground; moulded string course at lintel height; cornice, blocking course; segmental-arched recesses to all openings.

SW (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: symmetrical; 5 ashlar steps with original cast-iron handrails to panelled door to centre; plate glass rectangular fanlight above; windows to flanking bays. Modern linking additon to right with double doors for garage.

NE (REAR) ELEVATION: asymmetrical; boarded door to immediate right of centre; later (shown on Sutter's map, 1856) single storey extension to outer left.

12-pane timber sash and case windows to principal elevation; modern windows to rear elevation. Slate piend and platformed roof; slate roof to extension to rear. Stugged ashlar wallhead stack with coping to NW; rendered and coped wallhead stack to SE; wallhead stack to rear,

INTERIOR: not seen, 1994.

BOUNDARY WALLS: droved ashlar with coping to front, broken to right; tall rubble garden walls to rear.
