Description
8 West Brighton Crescent is a classical house located in Portobello, Edinburgh, designed by John Baxter around 1826. It is a single-storey building with a basement at the rear and features three bays. The exterior is finished with polished ashlar on the ground floor, droved ashlar on the southwest basement, rubble on the northeast side, and bull-faced render on the rear and southeast elevation. There is a band course between the basement and ground floor, a moulded string course at lintel height, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with segmental-arched recesses for all openings.
The southwest, or principal elevation, is symmetrical, featuring five ashlar steps leading to a central panelled door, which is topped by a plate glass rectangular fanlight. Windows are located in the flanking bays. To the right, there is a modern linking addition with double doors for garage access.
The northeast, or rear elevation, is asymmetrical, with a boarded door immediately to the right of centre and a later single-storey extension on the outer left, as shown on Sutter's map from 1856.
The principal elevation includes 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the rear elevation has modern windows. The roof is a slate piend and platformed design, with a slate roof on the rear extension. There are stugged ashlar wallhead stacks with coping on the northwest side, a rendered and coped wallhead stack on the southeast, and another wallhead stack at the rear.
The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls consist of droved ashlar with coping at the front, which is broken to the right, and tall rubble garden walls at the rear.
