Description
37 Brighton Place in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a classical two-storey house with a basement at the rear, built around 1825 by John Baxter. It originally formed part of a mirrored pair with a single-storey pavilion, but the adjacent house at No. 39 was demolished after 1896. The building features polished ashlar stonework that is deeply channelled at the ground level, with a harled pavilion on the northeast side and square rendered walls at the rear. Architectural details include a base course, a band course between the ground and first floors, a cill course at the first floor, a cornice, and a blocking course, along with coping on the pavilion.
On the northwest (principal) elevation, there are windows on each floor in every bay, including a deep-set panelled door on the outer left with a rectangular plate glass fanlight above it, and a window on the first floor. The pavilion also has a window.
The southeast (rear) elevation features a boarded door to the basement on the outer right, with a window on each floor in each bay, except for the blank bay on the left. There are single-storey additions on both the outer left and right sides.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, except for the pavilion, which has a six-pane upper sash and plate glass on the lower sash. The roof is M-gabled and grey slated, with an ashlar wallhead stack on the northeast and southeast elevations, and a rendered stack that was formerly mutual.
The boundary wall is made of droved ashlar with coping.
