Description
11 East Brighton Crescent is a classical house located in Portobello, Edinburgh, designed by John Baxter around 1827. This two-storey building with a basement features five bays and single-storey pavilion bays that are bowed at the rear. The front is constructed of polished ashlar, deeply channelled at the ground level, while the side elevations and rear are made of squared sandstone with snecked detailing. The basement and flanking pavilions are finished in droved ashlar. There are band courses between the basement and ground floor, as well as between the ground and first floor, along with a cill course at the first floor and a cornice with a blocking course.
On the principal (north) elevation, there are six steps leading up to a deep-set Edinburgh panelled door located in the bay to the right of the center, topped with a plate glass rectangular fanlight. A window is situated above this door at the first floor, with additional windows on each floor of the flanking bays. The basement has windows, although one bay on the left of center is blinded. Each pavilion has windows, and there are boarded doors at the extreme outer sections providing access to the garden.
The rear (south) elevation includes windows on each floor in the first, third, and fifth bays, including the basement, while the second and fourth bays are blank except for corbelled turrets at the first floor. Bowed pavilions also have windows.
The principal elevation features plate glass timber sash and case windows, with three windows to the left of the door at ground level having frosted glass. The rear has 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has piended sections, with graded slate candlesnuffer roofs at the rear topped with ball finials. The wings also have piended roofs, and there is a large 19th-century vent. The front has an ashlar coped wallhead stack, while the west elevation has a rendered and coped wallhead stack. The east elevation features rendered and coped wallhead stacks at both the front and rear.
Inside, the vestibule boasts a heavy cornice and panelled ceiling, along with a round-arched niche and a tripartite timber glazed vestibule door. A cast-iron banister and good plaster work, including ceiling roses, enhance the interior. There is a coloured border-glazed window on the staircase, an original white marble chimneypiece in the first-floor drawing room, encaustic tiles in the vestibule and hall, and original shutters still in place.
The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping and were formerly fitted with railings at the front, where original cast-iron gateposts remain at two entrances. The rear features tall rubble garden walls.
