Description

15 West Brighton Crescent in Portobello, Edinburgh, is a pair of mirrored classical houses designed by John Baxter around 1824. These two-storey buildings, which include a basement at the rear, have a rectangular plan and feature six bays with single-storey extensions that are slightly set back. The front is finished in polished ashlar on the ground and first floors, with channelled ashlar at the ground level. The half-basement at the front and the flanking recessed single-storey extensions are made of droved ashlar, while the southeast elevation and the rear of No 13 are constructed from rubble. The northwest and rear elevations of No 15 are harled. There are band courses between the ground level and the first floor, as well as between the ground and first floors; a cill course at the first floor; and a cornice and blocking course with coping on the flanking extensions.

The northeast (principal) elevation is symmetrical, except for the extension to the right of No 15, which has an angled wallhead to its left. Access is provided by four steps leading to deep-set panelled doors in the outer bays, which are topped by rectangular radial fanlights. Windows are present on each floor, with blinded windows on the first floor in bays 2 and 5, and a blinded window in the extension to the southeast. The extension to No 15 has been altered to create a double-door garage.

The southwest (rear) elevation is not fully visible, as of 1994. The houses feature 12-pane timber sash and case windows and a piended grey slate roof with a platform at the apex. There are sandstone, coped wallhead stacks at the front and rear, with rendered mutual stacks also present.

The interiors were not seen in 1994. The boundary walls are made of droved ashlar with coping and were formerly topped with railings, which have been broken to the right of No 15 for access to the garage.
