42 Leith Walk, Edinburgh

42 Leith Walk is a four-storey, three-bay townhouse with a basement, dating from before 1804. It is part of a nearly regular terrace of five houses. The building is constructed of cream sandstone, featuring dressed ashlar with polished dressings, coursed rubble on the southwest elevation, and rubble at the rear. There is a band course above the basement, and the ground floor windows are architraved and corniced. The eaves cornice is dentilled.

On the southeast (front) elevation, there is a pilastered and corniced doorway located to the right of center, which has a rectangular plate glass fanlight and a two-leaf panelled door. The remaining bays and floors have single windows. To the right, there is a single rectangular dormer with a piended roof, and to the left, a rectangular tripartite piended dormer.

The northwest (rear) elevation features a semi-circular projecting stairwell and single windows. The southwest elevation has a raised gablehead with a broad apex stack and single windows, some of which are blinded.

The windows are timber sash and case, mostly with 12-pane glazing, although some replacement windows are present at the rear. The roof is covered with black slate and includes the apex stack mentioned earlier, along with a coped mutual stack.

The interior was not seen in 1993. The property has low rubble boundary walls at the front, along with some original iron railings.
