Description
This is an early 19th century house located at 68, 70, 72, 74, and 76 Leith Walk in Leith, Edinburgh. The building features decorative late 19th century style shopfronts, which are replicas from 1985, projecting into what was once the front garden. There is a single storey extension at the rear. The front is made of grey ashlar sandstone with dressed ashlar and polished dressings, while the rear and sides are constructed from variegated rubble, coursed and squared on the sides, and coursed at the rear. The building has a dentilled eaves cornice and nailhead bands above the door lintels.
On the front elevation, there are four projecting single storey flat-roofed shopfronts at ground level, featuring a continuous fascia and dentilled cornice. To the right of the centre, there is an entrance to a common stair with a rectangular plate glass fanlight and a panelled door. The shops are separated by flat pilasters adorned with floral carvings and ornate Corinthian capitals, with recessed doorways that have glass doors and display windows framed by slender basket-arched mullions. The entrances to Nos 74 and 72 feature a black and white marble finish. Behind the shops, the original house has a three-bay design with windows on the first floor, and there is a large modern box dormer with three windows, panelled sidelights, and later piended roofs to enhance the box dormer's profile.
The rear elevation includes a single storey rectangular-plan piend-roofed extension at ground level, with single windows on the first floor and two modern box dormers. The northeast elevation is gabled with a broad apex stack and has a single window in the gablehead. The southwest elevation is also gabled with a broad apex stack and features a single storey shopfront at ground level.
The windows throughout the building are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The roof is slate with lead flashings and includes two coped apex stacks. The skews are also coped.
Inside, shop No 68 has ornate cornices, while the remaining shops have false ceilings.
