Description

This building at 6 Chalmers Crescent in Edinburgh is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan villa constructed around 1965. It features squared and snecked rubble with a polished ashlar west elevation. The design includes a base and blocking courses, a cornice, roll-moulded window surrounds, stugged and rusticated quoins, and pedimented ashlar dormers.

On the west (entrance) elevation, there is a central entrance with an architraved door surrounded by a carved foreate and foliate band. The door is supported by carved consoles and features a panelled design with a plate glass fanlight above. At the first floor, there is a single architraved and lugged window in the centre. To the right, a full-height slightly advanced bay contains tripartite windows with a dividing cornice, while to the left, a full-height canted window also has a dividing cornice. Above the eaves, there are three ashlar-faced pedimented dormer windows. The lower two-storey wing has single windows at both the ground and first floors, matching the main details.

The north elevation features a lower two-storey service wing, while the east elevation shows symmetrical fenestration on the main house and single windows on the service wing at both levels. The villa has a mixture of four-pane and plate sash and case windows.

The roof is a grey slate piended design with lead flashing, four skylights, and a corniced wallhead stack to the south, along with a rendered wallhead stack to the north.

Inside, there is a leaded light vestibule door, encaustic tiles, and an ornate plaster cornice. The property is complemented by a low droved ashlar coped retaining wall to the street, wrought-iron barleysugar gatepiers with decorative castings, and high mutual boundary walls. There is also a large early 20th-century garage located at the rear.
