1 Palmerston Road, Edinburgh

1 Palmerston Road is a double villa built around 1867. It has two stories and a rectangular plan with four bays, and it is constructed from squared and snecked rubble, featuring a stugged ashlar entrance elevation. The building has a base and blocking course, a cornice, and stop-chamfered quoins. Notable design elements include distinctive, shallow hoodmoulds over the windows and roll-moulded architraves.

On the south (entrance) elevation, there are entrances located in the second and third bays, featuring advanced round-arched doorways with roll-mouldings, carved consoles, and cornices. The doors are panelled, and above them are plate glass fanlights. Single windows above the entrances have decorative wrought-iron guards on the cornice below. The outer left and right sides have full-height canted windows with dividing cornices.

The east elevation is blank, as is the west elevation. The north elevation has not been seen. The villa features a mixture of 4-pane and plate glass sash and case windows, grey slate roofing, coped gables, and canted dormer windows on the outer left and right. There are paired box dormers at the center and twin corniced stacks on the east and west sides. The south elevation retains original decorative rainwater goods.

Inside, No 1 has an encaustic tiled vestibule and decorative plaster mouldings, while No 3 features an encaustic tiled hallway and an original staircase with a cast-iron balustrade. The property is enclosed by a low coped wall along the street, which has two end piers with chamfered corners and an incised diamond motif.
