Description

Hope Park and Buccleuch Congregational Church, built in 1876 by Sutherland & Walker, showcases an elaborate North Italian Romanesque style. The building features a two-tier and basement five-bay frontage, with a railed basement area that includes high-quality ironwork between stone dies. Giant pilasters rise to the level of the springing of the arches in the upper tier. The lower tier has triple-arched windows, while the upper level is marked by overarched bipartites with tympana pierced by circles. The entrance bay on the east side is slightly advanced and raised one stage to form a tower, which includes a projecting round-arched porch with an arcaded parapet. The pedimented tower stage features round-arched and keyblocked triple windows set within angle pilasters and is topped with a French pavilion roof. Inside, the church has a plain galleried interior with a flat ceiling and retains its original furnishings.
