Description
142-144 High Street in Edinburgh is an early 19th-century tenement building that stands five stories tall and features five bays. The central entrance is notable for its Ionic columns and pediment, leading into New Assembly Close. The ground floor accommodates shops, while the building is constructed from sandstone ashlar with raised cills. The upper floors have half-blind openings at the central stair bay.
At No 144, there is a painted, double-height shop front that includes a Diocletian window on the first floor, along with decorative spandrels and classical detailing. The outer bays are topped with a pair of piended-roof dormers. The windows throughout are predominantly 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with Scottish slate, and the building features particularly broad brick and harled stacks with clay cans, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods.
