Description
174-180 High Street in Edinburgh is a substantial five-storey, twelve-bay tenement built around 1825, incorporating earlier elements. The building features Classical detailing and has later shopfronts on the ground floor. It is constructed of coursed ashlar, which is painted at the first floor. The design includes raised cills, a moulded string course between the first and second floors, panelled cill aprons on the second floor, a cill course at the third floor, and a belt course at the eaves. There are blind openings on the eighth bay at the second, third, and fourth floors. A wide segmental-arched pend on the centre left leads to Old Assembly Close, while a round-arched doorway with a bracketed cornice is located on the centre right.
The windows are predominantly twelve-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with Scottish slate, and the building features particularly broad end and ridge stacks, clay cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
