Description

231 High Street in Edinburgh is a five-storey and attic tenement building dating from around 1795, which incorporates earlier elements and has undergone later alterations. The building features nine bays and includes shops on the ground floor. At the rear, there is a tall truncated wing situated between North Fowlis' Close and Geddes Entry. The exterior is faced with ashlar stone, while the rear is constructed of rubble.

The fourth bay from the left is narrow and has a steep stair leading to the flats on the ground floor, with blind windows on the second, third, and fourth floors above. There is a pend leading to the Old Stamp Office Close on the outer right side, and another pend leading to North Fowlis' Close in the third bay from the left. The narrow wing between North Fowlis' Close and Geddes Entry has blind windows on the lower floors and a rendered wallhead stack.

On the northern rear elevation, there is a segmental-arched pend (Old Stamp Office Close) on the outer left, and tripartite windows with relieving arches above. The central wallhead gable has been rebuilt and rendered. The building features 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a roof covered with grey slates, and corniced ridge stacks with circular cans.
