Description
124 High Street in Edinburgh is a commercial building attributed to John Baxter, dating from around 1790. It is a three-storey structure with an attic, featuring a seven-bay by four-bay Classical design and a prominent corner position at Hunter Square and High Street. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar, with raised cills and in-and-out raised quoins. A Diocletian window is located within the pediment facing Hunter Square. The second floor on the High Street elevation has a fluted frieze and cornice, decorated with rose roundels, and there is a four-bay attic above, topped with a pediment that has a broad stack at the apex.
The building predominantly features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, and the roof is covered with Scottish slate. It has particularly broad brick and harled stacks with clay cans, as well as cast-iron rainwater goods.
