Description
136-140 High Street in Edinburgh is a five-storey, eight-bay residential and commercial tenement built in 1825, incorporating earlier materials due to a fire in 1824. The building features an ashlar facade, with a later ground floor made of squared and snecked rubble. It has raised cills and two wide segmental-arch openings on the ground floor to the left. In the center, there is a narrow round-arched pend leading to Stevenlaw's Close, along with a large plate glass window and doorway on the far right. The building is topped with a pair of bi-partite dormers at both the far left and right.
Most of the windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, and the roof is covered with Scottish slate. The building has particularly broad brick and harled stacks with clay cans, and it features cast-iron rainwater goods.
