Description
94 Inverleith Place is a villa designed by John Begg around 1894, featuring two storeys and a basement. It has a square plan and three bays, built in the 17th century Scots Revival style. The villa is notable for its polygonal bay window on the south side and steps leading up to a balustraded platform and entrance door on the east side. The exterior is harled with ashlar margins, and there is a corbelled gable at the rear. A large six-light stair window on the east side includes stone mullions and transoms.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing the polygonal bay window at the ground level on the right, topped with a steeply sloping, slated roof. A central pedimented dormer protrudes from the wallhead. On the east elevation, there is a recessed timber entrance door on the right, framed by a roll-moulded surround and a pedimented doorhead with an oculus. To the left, an upper storey window features a semicircular pediment.
The villa predominantly has 12- and 6-pane timber sash and case windows over plate glass. The roof is covered with grey slates, and it has beak skewputts, as well as tall, coped gablehead and ridge stacks.
Inside, as seen in 2009, there is some decorative timberwork in the window bay, a carved timber fire surround with flanking round-arched alcoves, and simpler fire surrounds in other rooms. The interior also features decorative cornicing, a dog-leg stair with timber balusters and banister, and a large coloured glass stair window with a decorative glazing pattern.
