Description
Bridge No. 1 on the Union Canal in Viewforth, Edinburgh, was designed by engineer Hugh Baird and built between 1818 and 1822. This single-span bridge features a segmental arch made of yellow sandstone, with stugged ashlar and polished dressings.
The northeast and southwest elevations showcase a rusticated arch that includes a nailhead keystone, which serves as a corbel for a carved emblem—featuring a castle on the northeast side and a tree on the southwest side. Above the arch, there is a railed parapet that is supported by octagonal piers, which have polygonal coping on semi-circular pendant corbels. A band course runs along the base of the ashlar-coped parapet, which is designed to sweep down to meet the piers. The intrados of the arch is also made of ashlar.
