Description
48 Pilrig Street in Edinburgh is a pair of mirrored classical houses built in 1823. They are two stories tall with a basement and attic, featuring six bays. The front is made of sandstone ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are constructed from rubble. The design includes a base course, a cill course with corniced and architraved windows on the ground floor, a cill band on the first floor, an eaves cornice, and a blocking course with central raised tablets. Each house has ashlar steps and entrance platts that extend over the basement.
The principal elevation showcases Ionic pilastered and corniced doorpieces with fanlights in the center bays, flanked by windows in the remaining bays. Above, there is regular fenestration, with piended and canted tripartite dormers on the left and right, as well as roof lights.
The south gable elevation has windows on both the ground and first floors, with two additional windows in the attic. The north gable elevation features visible raised flues and blocked openings. The rear elevation is three stories high, with the taller wallhead finishing at the roof. It has four bays, with the right bays advanced, regularly fenestrated, and smaller windows in the attic.
The houses have timber sash and case windows, with plate glass glazing on No 46 and 12-pane windows on No 48. The roofs are covered with grey slates, and there are stone skews and gablehead stacks, with a stack on the east pitch. Later cast-iron railings are also present.
The interior was not seen in 1998. The boundary walls consist of low rubble walls topped with ashlar saddleback copes.
