Description
17 Pilrig Street in Edinburgh is a pair of mirrored, two-storey and attic townhouses dating from the earlier to mid 19th century. These three-bay houses, which include a basement, are part of a terrace of nine houses. They are constructed from cream sandstone with tooled ashlar and polished dressings, while the rear features coursed rubble. The buildings have an ashlar base course, with architraved and corniced windows on the first floor, a dentilled eaves cornice, and a blocking course.
The front elevation is symmetrical, with doorways positioned in the central bays, featuring pilastered doorpieces, deep-set panelled doors, and fanlights with radial astragals. There are single windows above on the first floor and in the remaining bays, along with two different tripartite canted dormers.
The rear elevation has single windows, a central wallhead stack, and various dormers. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roof is covered with black slate and includes lead flashings, Velux rooflights, two apex stacks at the gables, and one wallhead stack. A recessed downpipe is located at the centre.
The interior was not seen in 1993. There is a low boundary wall at the front with some original railings.
