Description
21 Pilrig Street in Edinburgh is a mirrored pair of two-storey and attic, three-bay townhouses with a basement, dating from the earlier to mid-19th century. These houses are part of a terrace of nine and are constructed from cream sandstone, featuring tooled ashlar with polished dressings and coursed rubble at the rear. The buildings have an ashlar base course, with architraved and corniced windows on the first floor, a dentilled eaves cornice, and a blocking course.
The front elevation is symmetrical, with doorways in the center bays, each featuring pilastered doorpieces and deep-set panelled doors topped with rectangular plate glass fanlights. There are single windows above on the first floor and in the remaining bays, along with a tripartite canted dormer on the left side.
The rear elevation has single windows, a central wallhead stack, and various dormers. The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass glazing. The roof is covered with black slate and includes lead flashings, Velux rooflights, two apex stacks at the gables, and one wallhead stack. A recessed downpipe is located at the center.
The interior was not seen in 1993. There is a low boundary wall at the front with some original railings.
