Description
Kellerstane House is an asymmetrical classical/baronial villa dating from the earlier 19th century, situated on a sloping site to the south. The building has two storeys to the north and two storeys over a deep raised basement to the south. It is rectangular in plan, with a rectangular projection to the east. The exterior is constructed of stugged cream and honey-coloured sandstone, with polished ashlar dressings and droved margins, featuring chamfered reveals. A bracketed slab canopy, eaves cornice, base course, and band course are also present. The roof was absent in 1992 and the building is now derelict.
The north (entrance) elevation has a prostyle portico to the left bay, featuring twin Tuscan columns supporting an entablature. The doorway is blocked, and the original rectangular fanlight is also blocked. A blank bay is positioned to the outer left. A tripartite window sits immediately to the right of the portico, and a large window is centrally located, with narrow sidelights and stone mullions framed by Tuscan pilasters supporting an entablature. A gable is present to the outer right, with symmetrically placed windows at both ground and first floor levels; the ground floor window is taller.
The south (rear) elevation is two storeys with five bays over the raised basement, separated by a band course. The main block occupies the left side, with the central two bays slightly advanced. Windows are symmetrically placed. A pentice slab canopy is situated at the piano nobile level. Triangular dormer-headed windows are present. Most windows are now blocked, with the exception of the outer left basement window which retains a 16-pane sash and case. An advanced gable is located to the outer right, featuring a full-height canted bay corbelled to square at the upper floor. A ground floor door and a tripartite window with an attached hoodmould are also present; the hoodmould continues as a pediment moulding supported by twin giant ashlar brackets.
The east elevation consists of a two-bay block to the left and a recessed three-bay block to the right. It features two basement windows and two dormerheaded windows symmetrically disposed to the left block, plus a tripartite window at the centre of the first floor; the left hand stone mullion is now missing. A gabled bay is centrally positioned, with symmetrically disposed windows, including a 12-pane sash and case window in the gablehead (now lacking glazing); it has a broken-pedimented moulding. A single bay is located to the left, incorporating a recessed return of the porch to the outer right.
The west elevation displays three bays to the left, grouped as one to two at the first floor, with the outer left window bricked up. A door is positioned to the right, with a basement-level window to the left. A slightly advanced gabled bay is positioned at the outer right, with symmetrically placed windows.
A retaining wall, with modern steps leading to the basement level, runs along the west side. The building is roofless. Ashlar coping is visible on the skews and dormerheads.
