Description
Gogarburn House is a large, two-storey house with a raised basement, built in 1893 by James Jerdan, and extended in 1896 by the same architect. Later additions were made during its conversion to hospital use. The house is constructed in a Scots Renaissance style, with harled walls contrasted by pink and white sandstone dressings.
The east (main) elevation is asymmetrical. A prominent pink sandstone portico-in-antis is positioned off-centre to the left, accessible via a stair and a platform that overhangs the basement recess; decorative latticed iron railings are present. A tripartite round-arched arcade sits above the portico, supported by two central columns on a die. The arch springs from an impost to the right and terminates in an engaged column to the left, featuring console keystones; a triangular pediment sits above the central arch, with an entablature above. A plain door is flanked by two round-headed windows, each with a 12-pane sash and case. An ashlar plaque is centrally located on the first floor, with bipartite windows on either side; the cornice of the entablature forms the window cill. An advanced gable to the outer left features symmetrically placed windows, including a barred tripartite window at ground level, a large plate glass sash and case window at the first floor, and a bipartite window at the second floor, finished with a segmental-headed pediment. A corniced frieze above the window defines the gablehead area, topped by a die supporting a finial that rises through the gable. Pyramidal angle finials are also present. To the right of the portico, a segmental gable is topped by a large window at the principal floor with 4 over 6-lying-pane glazing; a bipartite window occupies the first floor. An advanced gable to the outer right has two ground floor windows with an entablature. An elaborate centrepiece in pink sandstone unifies the first and attic floor windows, including triangular-pedimented windows at the first floor linked to a raised blank plaque supporting a plinth with an 1893 datestone, set within a segmental, shell-pedimented frame. A triangular gablehead has ogee-moulded shoulders, angle finials, and a finial rising through the centre of the gablehead.
The south elevation is four bays wide, rising to a gable at the centre two bays, with two windows featuring segmental-headed pediments. A lean-to conservatory is positioned centrally on the ground floor, with windows to the ground floor outer left and right. A recessed jamb is located at the rear left.
The north elevation is three bays wide, with symmetrically disposed windows at the first floor; the window to the outer right has been enlarged to form a doorway and now incorporates a fire-escape. A flat-roofed jamb features a canted bay to the outer left on the ground floor, with a door to the left. A parapet is shaped at the centre to accommodate a wallhead stack.
The west (rear) elevation presents an L-plan with single-storey additions to the north. Some additions and alterations are present. The jamb to the left features dormerheaded windows, and a canted window sits at the first floor of the outer right gable.
Most windows on the main elevation’s right bay are 12-pane sash and case. Other windows are plate-glass sash and case. The roof is grey slate, piended in style, with an ashlar ridge and ashlar coping to the skews. Faceted rainwater heads are positioned to the right and left of the portico.
The interior features plain mouldings and a staircase. It has been altered for hospital use, including the installation of fire-escapes.
