53 Regent Street, Portobello, Edinburgh

53 Regent Street is an early 19th-century classical house with a later small addition to the southeast. It is a single-storey building with a basement, featuring three bays and situated at the corner of Straiton Place and Regent Street. The ground floor is finished in painted polished ashlar, while the basement level consists of squared rubble interspersed with droved ashlar. The side elevation facing Straiton Place is made of squared sandstone, and the blank rear elevation is harled. The building has a broad dividing band course, a cornice, and a blocking course, with moulded architraves on the Regent Street elevation.

The west elevation on Regent Street is symmetrical, with four steps leading up to the centre, which has original plain cast-iron handrails. There is a deep-set panelled door within an architraved doorpiece, topped by a radial rectangular fanlight. Windows are located in the flanking bays at each level.

On the north elevation facing Straiton Place, the windows are irregularly arranged in each bay, and the basement is not fully exposed. The ground floor features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, while the basement has 6-pane windows. The roof is a graded slate piended design, with rendered and coped wallhead stacks on the side elevations and rear.

The interior was not seen in 1994. The boundary walls and railings are rendered and coped, topped with fleur-de-lys headed railings.
