Description

2 Young Street South Lane in Edinburgh is a former house built by John Young shortly after 1779. This classical building features two storeys, a half-sunk basement, and an attic, and is located on a corner site. It is constructed from droved cream sandstone ashlar with polished dressings, and the ground floor is painted. The building has an eaves cornice and includes timber framing and a cornice at the public bar. An elaborate wrought-iron bracket supports a bar sign with early lettering that reads 'Bernard's Pale Ale,' affixed to the left-hand window. There are two large piend-roofed canted dormers that are slate-hung. The gable end is made of coursed rubble and has two bays, while the rear of the building rises three storeys. There is also a later single storey and attic three-bay house made of stugged and snecked sandstone that adjoins the rear (No 2 Young Street Lane South).

The windows are primarily timber sash and case, although there are non-traditional uPVC windows on the first floor. The building features ashlar coped skews and stone stacks, which have been partly rebuilt and rendered on the east side.

Inside, there are four-panelled timber doors and timber boarded panelling up to the dado. The central corridor has a moulded cornice, while the main bar on the left has a simple cornice. The bar features an L-plan timber-panelled counter, a simple low gantry with cupboards and a mirror, and a carved timber chimneypiece that is partly obscured by the counter in the main bar. There is also a brick chimneypiece in the sitting area on the right.
