Description

115 George Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey former classical house built around 1790 by James Nisbet, with later alterations. The building features a basement and an attic, and has a three-bay façade made of polished cream sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has channelled rustication, while the upper floors are supported by giant fluted Corinthian pilasters, which are paired at the ends. A fluted band course with rosettes runs beneath the pilasters, and there is a swagged frieze, cornice, and solid parapet above. A fluted band course is also present above the first floor. The building has modern canted piend-roofed dormers and a full-height bowed bay at the rear.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes, and the roof is covered with grey slates, featuring ashlar coped skews and stone stacks.

Inside, the upper floors are linked with No 113 and boast a very fine interior that showcases typical Nisbet plaster detailing, including a curving cantilevered stone stair with straight landings and an enriched cupola. The interior has been extended into a saloon at the rear. The cast-iron fleur-de-lys railings have been reinstated.
