Description

58 Queen Street in Edinburgh is a former terraced classical house dating from around 1790. It is a three-storey building with a basement and attic, featuring a three-bay façade made of droved Craigleith sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has channelled rustication, and there is a cill course at the first floor level. To the right, there is a pilastered doorcase that contains a tripartite doorway with a stepped back cornice, a nine-pane door, a semicircular fanlight (which is modern timber), and etched sidelights. The building also has a pair of large pedimented canted timber dormers.

The rear elevation is constructed of coursed rubble and features two large slate-hung dormers. The windows are timber sash and case with 12 panes, while the dormers have plate glass. The building has ashlar coped mutual skews, which are lead-covered on the east side, and broad dressed stone mutual stacks that have been rebuilt on the west side. The roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the entrance lobby has a simple enriched ceiling. An arcaded screen with panelled pilasters and fanlights leads to the stair hall, which features a deep longitudinal central curving cantilevered stair with broadening landings, fitted into a rectangular space. The stair has plain square iron banisters and cast-iron tray rests on all floors. The former Dining Room includes a pilastered sideboard niche and a painted chimneypiece. On the first floor, the former Drawing Room has a dentilled cornice with a swagged frieze, a dado rail, and a grey marble columned chimneypiece. The rear left room features a stripped timber chimneypiece with gesso enrichments.

The property is also adorned with cast-iron spearhead railings.
