Description

57, 59, and 61 North Castle Street in Edinburgh are a pair of classical houses built after 1792-1794. They are three stories high with a basement and attic, featuring nine bays and polished cream sandstone ashlar. The ground floor has V-jointed rustication, while the first floor showcases blind balustraded aprons, a fluted band course above, a triglyph frieze, and an eaves cornice. The outer bays are designed as a pair of bows, with doors located in the central three bays. The central door has a six-pane rectangular fanlight above it, and the flanking tripartite doors have round-headed radiating metal fanlights, much of which retains its original glass. These doors are framed by pilasters and a dentilled cornice, following the Queen Street model. The houses also feature a pair of piend-roofed tripartite dormers from the early 19th century.

Number 61 has been extended to the rear at the basement and ground levels across the full width of the building, with a glazed brick facing to the lightwell. The windows are 12-pane timber sash and case, and the roofs have ashlar coped skews, large stone mutual stacks, and grey slates.

Inside, number 57 has a later glazed screen in the hall and a broad panelled arch leading to the stairhall. The cantilevered stone stair has quarter landings and plain round iron banisters, continuing down to the basement. The former dining room features an apsidal end (and bow), a panelled dado, an early 19th-century cornice, a ceiling rose, and a black slate chimneypiece. The southeast room has a dado and a tripartite window, while the northeast room has a grey marble chimneypiece. On the first floor, the former drawing room includes a rose and a grey marble chimneypiece, and the rear room has a full-height bed recess (now with a door to the front) and a tripartite window with a closet off.

Number 61 has a similar hall and a stair with modern wrought-iron banisters that continues to the second floor and then to the attic, incorporating part of the original stair. The former dining room features a panelled dado, and the northeast rear room has a full-height bed recess on the inner side wall. On the second floor, there is a former dining room with a sideboard recess that has 19th-century plaster cresting and cornice, along with a panelled dado. The sole flat at number 59 was not seen in 1995.
