Description
1-5 Young Street in Edinburgh is a three-storey and attic, four-bay tenement building, constructed by John Young shortly after 1779. The building is made of coursed rubble sandstone and is located on a corner site. The ground floor has been altered to accommodate shops, with a common stair door at the center featuring a timber cornice and a shop to the left. There are also a pair of piend-roofed dormers.
The gable was largely rebuilt in 1995, and the rear elevation is an irregular three-storey, four-bay design. At the rear, there is a painted two-storey, three-bay mews building that has an infilled carriage arch and a garage door flanking the entrance.
The building features 12-pane timber sash and case windows, rebuilt ashlar stacks, ashlar coped skews, and grey slates. The interior was not seen in 1995, but it is noted to have fine first-floor rooms with corniced overdoors.
