Description

Dobie & Son, located at 94 and 94A George Street in Edinburgh, is a narrow four-storey, two-bay Renaissance office building with a shop on the ground floor. Designed by Peddie and Kinnear in 1882, the shopfront was added in 1929. The ground floor features a three-bay neo-Georgian shopfront, with a doorpiece on the right that includes a cornice and a pedimented fanlight. The first floor is framed by coupled Ionic pilasters and an entablature, which surround arched windows and a shell-headed niche at the center. The second floor has similar features but uses Roman Doric pilasters, pilastered bipartite windows with sculptured friezes, and a central panel. The third floor has a six-bay arcade framed by panels, topped with a cornice and a panelled parapet.

The building has a dressed sandstone elevation facing the lane, which includes a central Venetian window and a hoist with a loading door to the left. The windows are timber, with casements on the first floor and plate glass sash and case windows above. A corniced ashlar stack and grey slates complete the exterior.

Inside, there is a top-lit saloon at the rear.
