23, 23A Castle Street, Edinburgh

23 and 23A Castle Street in Edinburgh is a classical house built between 1792 and 1794, with later alterations. It originally had three storeys, a basement, and an attic, but now features a shop built out at ground level in the early 20th century. The building is constructed from droved sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. An arched tripartite doorway remains in the left bay. It has an eaves cornice and a pair of later 19th century canted piend-roofed dormers.

The windows are timber sash and case with four panes. The building has ashlar coped skews and large mutual stacks, with the northern stack made of stone and the southern stack rendered. The roof is covered with grey slates.

Inside, the ground floor features a former dining room with an apsidal end that has been opened up to the shop window at the front. There is a curving cantilevered stair that is top-lit, with alternating decorative cast-iron banisters, which simplifies at the second floor. The first floor has 19th century alterations and connects with No 21, which has a separate listing.
