Description
31 and 33 Castle Street in Edinburgh is a classical former house built between 1792 and 1794, now featuring shops at the ground level. The building is three stories high with an attic and has four bays that are irregularly spaced. It is constructed from droved sandstone ashlar. The ground floor includes two shops and a door with a 12-pane fanlight leading to the upper floors, which are adorned with panelled pilasters and a cornice. The upper floors have margin drafts and an eaves cornice. A full-width dormer, added in the later 19th century, features a pair of canted windows.
The windows are timber sash and case with plate glass, while the dormers have 4-pane windows. The building has ashlar coped skews, a rebuilt stone stack, and is covered with grey slates.
Inside, the ground floor has been significantly altered, but there may be some original features remaining on the upper floors.
