Description
12 Mayfield Terrace is a pair of classical houses built around 1860, which have recently been converted into flats. The building is two stories high with a basement and attic, featuring six symmetrical bays and a single-storey wing attached to the west. It is constructed from cream sandstone polished ashlar, with rubble on the sides and rear. The ground and first-floor windows have bracketed cills and multiple moulded architraves, while the first-floor windows also feature bracketed cornices and dentilled eaves.
On the north (entrance) elevation, there are doorways in the two outer bays, each with panelled doors and plate glass fanlights. The doorpieces are adorned with decoratively carved corbelled cornices and panelled stylised pilasters. Above these doorways, there are single windows on the first floor, with additional windows on both floors in the remaining bays. The roof features three light canted dormers above and a single window in the adjoining wing on the outer right.
The windows include plate glass, timber sash and case windows at No 14 with two-pane upper sashes, and six-pane windows at No 12. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with a corniced ridge stack that has square cans.
The interior was not seen in 1996, but original shutters are present on the ground floor windows. The boundary walls consist of a low coped rubble wall along the street, with replacement railings.
