Description

1 Pittville Street in Joppa, Edinburgh, is a later 19th-century building that has undergone some alterations. It is a two-storey and attic house with five bays on the Portobello High Street side and two bays on Pittville Street, situated at the corner where these two streets meet. The building includes shop spaces on the ground floor, specifically Nos 328 and 332 Portobello High Street. The exterior is finished in polished ashlar stone, featuring a base course, a band course, and a raised cornice above the canted window and the southwest elevation between the ground and first floor. There is a deep corbelled cornice above the first floor and a coped blocking course. The first floor has chamfered arrises and lugged margins, while the attic features segmental-arch windows.

On the southwest elevation facing Portobello High Street, the central bay is recessed. Each floor has windows in each bay, with a bipartite window in the central bay on the first floor. There is a modern shopfront in the central bay (Nos 330-332), which includes a deep-set door to the outer right. The bays to the right (fourth and fifth bays) also have modern shopfronts with timber boarding and a deep-set door in the center flanked by plate glass windows. The first and second bays feature a later 19th-century shopfront with French Gothic capitals on the cast-iron columns and a deep-set door in the center.

The southeast elevation on Pittville Street has a corniced and corbelled doorpiece with a six-panelled door in the right bay, a rectangular plate glass fanlight above, and a carved segmental arch in the lintel. There is a window on the first floor and a two-storey canted window in the left bay, which has segmental-arched recesses for each window on the ground floor.

The building has plate glass timber sash and case windows and gabled dormers with trefoil finials in the central bay and each bay of the southeast elevation, featuring a bipartite window in the left bay. The roof is covered with grey slate and has moulded skews and gabletted skewputts. The gablehead features stop-chamfered and coped stacks in the paired outer bays of the southwest elevation, while the northeast side has a stop-chamfered, coped wallhead stack with moulded octagonal cans. The cast-iron rainwater goods include decorative brackets.

Inside, there is plasterwork still in place at Nos 330-332 Portobello High Street, but the interiors of No 328 Portobello High Street and No 1 Pittville Street were not seen during the last inspection in 1994.

The boundary walls of the property are made of ashlar stone and are coped.
